Veterans’ Day Ceremony at Glenwood Cemetery

“Honouring All Who Serve”

Saturday September 24, 2016 at 9:45 am to 3:00 pm

9:45 – 11:30 Veterans’ Day Ceremony

Glenwood Cemetery, in partnership with Branch No. 78 The Royal Canadian Legion, No. 415 Wing Royal Canadian Air Force Association and 851 Prince Edward Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, will host the annual Veterans’ Day during Legion Week. Historic Glenwood Cemetery, a 62 acre property in the heart of Picton, is the final resting place for over 250 veterans who served in Canada’s military engagements. Among those veterans are six British airmen who died while training at the former RAF base known as No. 31 Bombing and Gunnery School. This former training base overlooking Picton was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, graduating hundreds of aircrew from many countries during the Second World War.

This is a wonderful ceremony. All guests will be greeted by the Air Cadets and directed to the assembly at the foot of the Veteran’s plot area. The 45 minute ceremony will include parade, colour parties, Prince Edward County Pipes and Drums and soloist Jeanette Arsenault. Dignitaries will be in attendance and a senior military officer from 8 Wing Trenton will salute the veterans with a military tribute. Canadian flags and poppies will be provided to all who wish to decorate the individual graves of our veterans. After the ceremony, refreshments will be served in Glenwood’s Stone Chapel.

1:00 – 3:00 Veterans’ Day Family Activities

New for this year will be a fun filled afternoon with a military theme for the whole family. Free Horse and Wagon Rides through the beautiful cemetery; Photo Contest with Phil Norton; Walking Tour “The Men Who Marched Away” – Stories by Maggie Haylock Capon and Music by Tenor Julian Gallo singing wartime songs; Loyalist Portrayal by Leigh Moore & Wendy Daxon; Scavenger Hunt and Site Records on Display
